Its here!
... and I dont have time to work on it as of now. FedEx delivered my MacBook Pro a day in advance.

First impressions:

- It is very sleek and light. Almost as light as my Thinkpad even after the screen size being larger.

- Mac OS X interface is sweet, smooth and pleasing.

- It is incredibly easy to do a lot of usual things like configuring a printer, getting online, etc. Most of the settings are filled up automatically as and when available.

- The light sensor based change of keyboard light and screen brightness is very cool and useful.

- The MagSafe power connector is a very cool feature. Contrary to my estimation, the magnet on the connector is very powerful.

Disappointments:

- The machine heats up a *lot*. More than my thinkpad does even after I am thrashing the CPU and the gpu with high end graphics games. The reason for it might be the aluminium case as it conducts heat outwards to keep the internal parts cooler. Particularly, the left side of the machine gets very hot. I am yet to talk to Apple about this to find out if this is the way its supposed to be or its a design flaw. Most of the time this is not a problem but then the heat gets to irritate you once it reaches very close to the left-bottom part of the keyboard area, under the speaker.

- Battery life seems to be an issue. In the first full charge, I was able to use the machine for 2.45 hrs. That might improve with me not copying large amounts of data on wireless or USB.

- The battery charge indicator is not able to correctly display numbers sometimes. At this moment, the AC is plugged in and it is displaying "Calculating..." for the past 2 hrs.

Occasionally, I can see things not working properly.

- Photobooth got stuck once when I clicked a pic and then tried to delete it, it wont let me delete it.

- As of now, I have not found an easy way to *lock* the screen if I wish to move away from the machine. You can make the machine "sleep" but then thats not what I want. Maybe I need to do some reading up on the shortcuts.

- iChat dosent let me get online on more than one jabber accounts. I have to "switch" between accounts. Not very useful if you have multiple accounts. Also, it creates three different windows for 3 different accounts instead of a single contact list like gaim. I thought Apple would have taken care of these basic UI features.

No pics yet. Maybe when we are back home.

Thanks for the initial report. Not quite what I was hoping to hear. Especially the heating up part. About 3 hours of battery life is disappointing, but something I can live with. How about noise? I loved how my Thinkpad is completely silent and cool running while my Powerbook G4 gets pretty hot and noisy after a while.

As for chatting, use the free and excellent Adium.

The heat part is really bad. I thought only the top part of the laptop heats up but just a few mins back, I thought I would try using it while I am comfortably sitting on my bed and its just not possible to keep the MacBook on your laps. Its *HOT* from the bottom too.

IIRC, the manual explicitely warns of excessive skin contact with the laptop's bottom to prevent skin irritation etc.

Darn! The thinkpad is so much better in terms of heat and being able to use it as a "laptop".

I think most of the heat is due to the hefty X1600 GPU.

Perhaps you should try Adium if you want to log on to multiple acounts. It's based on the Gaim libraries, lets you log on with as many screen names as you want for virtually any protocol, and integrates quite well visually with the rest of the OS. I imagine you would like it.

I use screen corners to lock (sys prefs).

Use Adium for chat, google, YM et al and Camino for web browsing. Both are universal binaries.

Yeah, I am missing a few other frequently apps/features and will dig through the available options soon. Its strange that Apple being so anal about the quality of their UI, missing these small issues. I mean, what the heck is the problem with allowing people to use multiple jabber accounts at once.

I am sure there are more surprises in store as i dig more into it.

Yes, not all Apple applications are perfect. Far from it. IPhoto for example was a huge disappointment for me when I made the switch. It doesnt even get close to the free Picasa on Windows.
The overall experience with OS X has been fantastic though. And there is a bunch of really great and slick freeware applications, like in this case Adium.
And somebody else already mentioned Quicksilver (http://quicksilver.blacktree.com/). Its the best thing ever. It completely has changed the way I interact with my computer and I miss it a lot whenever I use Windows or Linux now.

Also, Quicksilver has a trigger for screen locking that I find more convenient. I've assigned it to Command+Ctrl+Esc. I wanted Command+Ctrl+Del, but QS won't take Del in a shortcut.

- The machine heats up a *lot*.

sadly it does, i think its not an issue with just your machine.

Couple of useful links i found.

How hot does your laptop actually get

59$ for a lap top stand

Battery life seems to be an issue. In the first full charge, I was able to use the machine for 2.45 hrs. That might improve with me not copying large amounts of data on wireless or USB.

I get about 3 hours but i am consistently building stuff and a lot of processor intensive operations.

I am still willing to put one of my kidneys up for rent in order to buy an Apple MacBook Pro.
